The Food Security, Justice and Sustainability Initiative
Background
The Food Security, Justice, and Sustainability Program is a flagship initiative by the Centre for Migrant and Refugee Health (CMRH), developed to improve access to nutritious food and enhance the physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing of migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and other vulnerable or isolated community members.
This program recognises that food insecurity is not merely a matter of hunger—it is deeply connected to social justice, public health, economic equity, and environmental sustainability. Our goal is to build community resilience and dignity through comprehensive food access, education, advocacy, and systems change.
Aim
To establish a community-led, culturally responsive food ecosystem that supports immediate nutrition needs while advocating for long-term food justice and sustainable practices, especially for communities facing barriers to food access and wellbeing.
Program Objectives
- Deliver immediate nutritional support through culturally appropriate food relief.
- Advocate for fair and equitable food systems that respect cultural identity and economic justice.
- Promote environmentally sustainable food production and consumption.
- Raise awareness of the link between food insecurity and mental health, particularly for youth and families.
- Engage communities through education, outreach, and participatory action.
