CMRH supports better communication and education to reduce the psychological burden on individuals and improve barriers to access to culturally appropriate mental healthcare for people at risk or yet at risk of mental illness.
The general population, including politicians, media outlets, journalists, and health practitioners, should be mindful of languages or words to describe mental illness to improve mental health, stigma, and other risk factors such as substance abuse addiction. Evidence shows that using appropriate language to refer to mental illness, stigma, and addiction can help to improve people perceptions, attitudes to reduce mental illness, stigma and facilitate access to treatment in healthcare settings and throughout society. Stigma contributes significantly to adverse health outcomes and can pose a barrier to seeking mental illness or substance use disorders treatments and interventions across the population.
